Oppo spin-off brand Realme will launch its 64MP quad camera toting phone, the Realme XT, in India on September 13. Realme is now sending out invites to the media for a press event scheduled for September 13 where it will launch the Realme XT (Project Hawkeye) for the Indian market. Realme may not be the first brand to launch a 64MP camera phone, but looks like, it’s all set to become the first brand to launch a 64MP camera phone in India. Xiaomi will launch its own 64MP camera phone, the Redmi Note 8 Pro, in India by October.

Realme India CEO Madhav Sheth had recently shared a picture taken with the Realme XT on Twitter confirming three things about it - the phone will come with four rear cameras, the main camera will use a 64MP Samsung GW1 sensor, and India will be the first market to get it. Realme has shared more details about the Realme XT, since then, including the design of the phone from the back. By the looks of it, the Realme XT will be a ‘pro’ version of the Realme 5 Pro that comes with a 48MP main camera – its key highlight being its 64MP main camera.

The Realme XT, as mentioned earlier, is based on Samsung’s 64MP GW1 sensor that works on the same principle as its 48MP GM1 and 32MP GD1 sensors, effectively producing sharper, more detailed 16MP photos in low light, and using software interpolation to produce high resolution 64MP photos as and when required.

Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 8 Pro also uses the same sensor. To recall, the Redmi Note 8 Pro has a four-camera setup on the rear consisting of a 64MP main camera, an 8MP ultra-wide camera, a 2MP depth camera, and a 2MP macro lens. Considering how both Realme and Xiaomi are known for their aggressive pricing, it won’t be surprising if both the brands make the 64MP smartphone camera a mainstream affair as well with their respective launches.
